Downtown Memphis
Downtown Memphis is home to one of the largest urban overhauls we’ve ever experienced. In the past few years, developers and business owners have flooded downtown in an attempt to catch up to what the rest of the country did years ago. Memphis has historically been behind the times and with this is no different. Looking at the other major metropolitan areas in Tennessee, its easy to see that even Nashville and Chattanooga realized years ago that there is value in a booming downtown. Now, Memphis is playing a catch up game and it may take a while to catch on. With the creation of Harbor Town, Memphians realized that urban living was not only feasible, but enticing. Now huge developments in the South End are trying to mirror what Harbor Town has done in a slightly different way. Condos and Lofts are being created in warehouses and offices and the idea of retail below, living above is taking off all up and down South Main. In fact the South Main Arts District has become home to the majority of this urban living revitalization. In the core of downtown, new restaurants are springing up where vacant buildings once sat. New hotels, like the Westin, have sprung up around the entertainment areas. Even the North End is getting a face lift as new offices and housing developments like Uptown, are being built. Organizations like the Center City Commission, Riverfront Development Corporation, and developers are playing a key role in directing the growth. Now we will just have to wait and see how a suburban city like Memphis reacts to the urban style that downtown Memphis is trying so hard to sell.
